The Theology of Giving
Tithes, offerings, firstfruits, and alms - what the whole Bible actually teaches about giving, why God asks for it, and how to defend a healthy doctrine against both legalism and the prosperity distortion.
Few subjects are taught more often, or understood more poorly. This is the reference a leader can stand on and the study a new believer can follow.
We give because we have been given to - the generosity of God, supremely in the gift of His Son, is both the model and the motive of all Christian giving.
God is the Giver
Our giving is a response to His, never the cause of His favor. Generosity begins in the nature of God, not in the offering.

The question is never how much of my money I should give to God. It is how much of God's money I should keep.

God does not need our money. He asks for it because giving forms the heart and declares where our trust actually rests.

Most confusion about giving comes from collapsing distinct categories into one. Scripture keeps them separate, and the distinction brings freedom.
Tithe
Historically the first tenth - a baseline of regular, proportional giving to the local house of worship.
Do I honor God with the firstfruits of my regular income?Offering
Giving above and beyond the tithe as one is moved - freewill, special, sacrificial. For worship, missions, and vision.

Giving God the first and the best rather than the leftovers - a declaration of faith and of priority.

Direct giving to the poor and those in need - mercy and justice, never an afterthought in Scripture.

Answering the Objections

Fair, as far as it goes. Abraham's tithe was a one-time gift of war spoils and Jacob's was a conditional vow, so neither establishes a standing law on its own. But the New Testament raises the standard rather than lowering it - Jesus affirmed the heart behind tithing while calling out those who tithed their herbs and neglected justice and mercy. We honor the tenth as a wise historic floor, not as a law that buys standing with God.

Jesus talked about money constantly, and not because He was preoccupied with wealth. He understood that what we do with what we own is one of the clearest windows into what we actually worship. A church that never teaches on money leaves its people undiscipled in the very area their hearts are most contested.

The abuse of a doctrine is not an argument against the doctrine. Scripture is unembarrassed that God blesses generosity - and equally clear that the harvest is given so you may abound in every good work, not so you may hoard. The distortion is not the promise; it is the motive.

God measures sacrifice, not size. The widow who put in two coins gave more than all the wealthy, because the question was never the amount but the proportion and the heart. Start where you actually are, proportionally and honestly, and let it grow.

All three, and they are not in competition. The local house is the first center of regular, planned giving; offerings fund mission and vision beyond it; alms go directly to the poor. One transformed heart, three channels.

Grace, not law
A Spirit-empowered grace and an act of worship - never a tax that earns standing with God.
The heart, not the percentage
The tithe is honored as a wise starting point - a floor to build on, never a ceiling to stop at.
Faith in a generous God
We genuinely believe God provides, blesses, and multiplies. We expect Him to move.
No manipulation, ever
No guilt, pressure, hype, or false promises. "Not reluctantly or under compulsion."
Generosity as discipleship
A mark of maturity and Christlikeness - not an institutional fundraising need.
The poor are never forgotten
Mercy and care for the vulnerable are essential and non-negotiable, not an afterthought.
Integrity and transparency
Those who lead handle the gifts of God's people with complete honesty and accountability.
