The Gate — J Calaway — Make Today Count — Boring Life
Habits shape our lives in profound ways, and understanding how to cultivate positive habits can lead to lasting change. Let's get started!
Habits are the small decisions we make and actions we perform every day. According to research, about 40% of our daily actions are habits. This means that nearly half of what we do is on autopilot. The Bible also speaks to the importance of our daily actions and routines. In Proverbs 22:6, it says, "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." This verse highlights the long-term impact of our habits and the importance of instilling good ones early on.
Let's talk about how habits are formed. Charles Duhigg, in his book "The Power of Habit," explains the habit loop, which consists of three parts: the cue, the routine, and the reward. The cue is what triggers the habit, the routine is the behavior itself, and the reward is what you get from the behavior. Understanding this loop can help us break bad habits and form good ones.
The Apostle Paul also understood the power of habits. In Romans 12:2, he writes, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." This transformation involves changing our habits and aligning them with God's will. It's about making conscious choices to develop habits that reflect our faith and values.
The way you make today count is by living the habits that will move you each day to the life you have been called to live.
