FRESH EYES — Always Take Vacation (The Always Advantage, Commitment #8)

"Vacation isn't a break from your real life. It's the place where you finally see your real life clearly."

KEY TRUTHS

• Some things you can only see from a distance. Stare at the same four walls long enough and temporary problems start to feel permanent.

• Lift your eyes to the mountains (Ps. 121:1-2). Daily and weekly rest refill the tank — vacation is the long reset.

• God's qualities are seen in what He made (Rom. 1:20): tides, seeds and land all rest. You were designed inside that rhythm.

• Those who hope in the LORD renew their strength (Isa. 40:31). Vacation is a non-negotiable, not a reward.

LEADERSHIP REALITIES

• The leader who never steps back stops leading and starts firefighting — and you can't see the fire from inside it.

• "I'll go when things slow down" is the same as saying never.

• Memory works on a catalog of experiences, not a calendar of days. Your kids remember who you were on the trip (Ps. 19:1).

PRESENT-TENSE CHALLENGES

• The vacation didn't fail you — the preparation failed the vacation. Quiet waters get planned (Ps. 23:2-3).

• Write a handoff: who covers what, and the one or two specific emergencies worth a call.

• Set an honest out-of-office, then don't check. One check is the first domino. Delete the work apps.

• Choose disconnection over destination. A campsite fully present beats a resort working from the pool.

ACTION STEPS

• Today, block your dates for the next 12 months — five days in a row, not counting travel.

• Open a named vacation account with an automatic monthly transfer. $50 a month is $600 a year.

• This week, ask everyone going: "What do you truly need from this trip?"

• On the trip, run the daily debrief: What was your favorite moment today? What surprised you?

Scriptures: Psalm 121:1-2 • Psalm 23:2-3 • Psalm 19:1 • Romans 1:20 • Isaiah 40:31

Schedule the trip. Save the money. Fully be there. Make today count: better than yesterday, not near as good as tomorrow.
