The Gate — J Calaway — Make Today Count — When not If

“Let us not pray to be sheltered from dangers, but to be fearless when facing them.”

It’s easy to pray for protection—for God to remove obstacles, shield us from harm, or make our paths smooth. This speaks to the fact that it’s not if but when dangers come.

Instead of asking to avoid dangers, it urges us to pray for fearlessness in the midst of them. Why? Because life is full of dangers—health issues, financial struggles, relational conflicts, or even global uncertainties. Sheltering ourselves might limit growth, but facing them boldly builds character, faith, and resilience.

Think about the heroes of the Bible—they weren’t spared from trials; they were empowered through them.

Joshua was stepping into leadership after Moses, facing giants in the Promised Land. God didn’t promise no battles; He promised presence and strength. So, when we pray, let’s echo that: not “Remove the giants,” but “Make me fearless like Joshua.” (Joshua 1:9)

David, the shepherd-turned-king, knew valleys—literal and metaphorical. He faced lions, bears, Goliath, and betrayal. Yet, his prayer wasn’t for a detour around the valley but for God’s comforting presence in it. (Psalm 23:4)

dangers are inevitable, but fear isn’t. When we shift our prayers to “Lord, be with me in this valley,” we tap into that divine comfort that makes us fearless.

Imagine applying this today. Maybe you’re facing a tough conversation at work or a health diagnosis. Instead of praying solely for it to vanish, pray for the courage to walk through it, knowing God’s rod protects and His staff guides.

Remember, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” This was God’s word to Israel in exile, surrounded by dangers. He doesn’t say, “I’ll eliminate your enemies overnight.” No—He promises strength, help, and upholding. It’s like God saying, “I’ve got you; face it head-on.” In our lives, this means praying for that upholding hand when dangers loom, turning potential panic into purposeful action. (Isaiah 41:10)

Not matter What you face or are facing right now realize you have the power to face it with power, love and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7)
